Assistant Professor of Psychology

Dr. Jean Hillstrom is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at New York City College of Technology. Her research
interests include emotion, emotion and communication, age and argumentativeness/aggressiveness, age and health education,
age and medication adherence, age and job satisfaction, and age and job-related training performance. She has a long
history of involving and mentoring students in research activities, many supported through the Honors Scholars and Emerging
Scholars programs at City Tech. All of these projects resulted in local presentations and some have resulted in regional
(e.g., Eastern Psychological Association), national (e.g., Association for Psychological Science, Gerontological Society
of America) and international presentations (e.g., JJCCJ in Morocco) with awards. To increase research opportunities
in psychology for faculty and students, she developed and obtained funding for CityTech’s first Psychology Research Laboratory.
This $250,000 facility enables faculty research and faculty/student research collaboration using state-of-the art psychophysiological
and virtual reality equipment as well as the more traditional cognitive and experimental equipment. Dr. Hillstrom has
extensive service activities including Departmental Advisement Liaison, College Council, CUNY University Integrated IRBs,
and is currently serving as the Social Science Department’s Chairperson. She is senior personnel on the Bridges to the
Baccalaureate program and is serving as the RCR coordinator.
