Disgust: From Oral to Moral

March 15, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Presented by Dr. Hanah Chapman (Department of Psychology, Brooklyn College).

Abstract Being lied to, cheated upon, stolen from; these are among life’s most emotional experiences, and even watching them happen to someone else can trigger strong feelings. Recent work has confirmed the important role of emotion in human morality, but less is known about exactly what emotions are involved and how emotion exerts its influence. In this talk, I discuss the role of distinct emotions in morality, with a focus on moral disgust. This work suggests that distinct emotions make distinctive contributions to morality, and more generally, that a complete understanding of emotional influences on morality will require detailed study of individual emotions, not just emotional arousal.
